The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its updated Long Range Forecast Outlook for the 2024 Southwest Monsoon Season, covering the period from June to September. In its forecast, the IMD predicts normal monsoon conditions for Vidarbha this year.
According to the press note issued by the Weather Department, normal rainfall, ranging from 92% to 108% of the Long Period Average (LPA), is expected over the country as a whole during June 2024. Additionally, above-normal monthly rainfall is anticipated over most areas of the south peninsula and adjoining regions of central India, including Vidarbha.
However, the forecast also indicates below-normal rainfall over several areas of northern and eastern parts of Northwest India, the eastern part of Central India, and certain regions of Northeast India and the southeastern part of the South Peninsula.
While above-normal rainfall can benefit agriculture and water resources, it also poses risks such as flooding, transportation disruptions, public health issues, and ecosystem damage. To mitigate these risks, the IMD advises reinforcing infrastructure, implementing early warnings provided by the department, enhancing surveillance and conservation efforts, and establishing suitable response systems in sectors likely to be affected.
As the monsoon season approaches, authorities and communities in Vidarbha and other regions across India are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for the anticipated weather conditions.
