Nagpur’s Traffic Control Branch, in collaboration with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), has taken proactive measures to combat the persistent parking congestion in the city by designating 21 off-street parking spots across 10 zones. This strategic move aims to alleviate the chronic issue of disorderly parking, which often triggers traffic jams and conflicts on the roads of the state’s second capital.
Following a thorough survey jointly conducted by law enforcement and municipal authorities, a list of 75 roads deemed suitable for establishing parking areas for both four and two-wheelers was compiled. However, concerns have been raised regarding the initial list released by the Traffic Control Branch, as it appears to have overlooked several major commercial hubs such as Sitabuldi, Gandhibagh, Itwari, Gokulpeth, Khamla, and Lakadganj, with only a small portion of Central Avenue mentioned.
These bustling areas, characterized by high population density and vibrant markets, have long grappled with a scarcity of designated parking spaces, resulting in ad hoc parking arrangements and frequent disputes between business owners and residents, particularly during towing and clearance operations.
Shashikant Satav, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Traffic Control Branch, emphasized the importance of the newly designated parking spots in providing relief to citizens exhausted by the chaos of unregulated parking. Implemented on a trial basis, these spots will remain in effect until June 5.
Additionally, the Traffic Police have urged the NMC’s Enforcement Department to address encroachments on the notified streets promptly. Plans are underway to mark parking areas with white lines and install signboards for enhanced convenience.
Ravi Bundhade, Executive Engineer of Traffic at NMC, clarified that off-street parking will be provided free of charge initially, with the potential introduction of fees subject to policy decisions. He assured that no concrete proposal regarding this matter currently exists.
Citizens are encouraged to offer feedback and lodge complaints concerning the new parking initiative through the DCP, Traffic, Nagpur City Police. This initiative marks a significant stride towards resolving Nagpur’s longstanding parking woes, fostering optimism for improved traffic flow and and enhanced urban convenience in the days ahead.
