The Nagpur Flying Club (NFC) is set for substantial growth with the recent approval to utilize Chandrapur’s Morwa Airport, as reported by a local daily. Facing constraints at the congested Nagpur Airport, NFC sought expansion opportunities to facilitate smoother training operations for aspiring pilots aiming for Private Pilot License (PPL) and Commercial Pilot License (CPL).
The Nagpur Flying Club (NFC), a historic institution dating back to the British era, faces challenges due to congestion at Nagpur Airport, causing delays for students in completing their pilot license flying hours. Nagpur Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, NFC’s chair, thanked MADC for addressing their request to expand to Chandrapur’s Morwa Airport. She sees this as a significant step toward establishing a second base, with the next move being DGCA approval after facility inspection. Bidari emphasized the importance of this expansion for NFC’s growth.
Bidari highlighted important tasks ahead like runway recarpeting and constructing a compound wall to deter animal intrusion. NFC also applied to TRAI for a telecom license.
MADC Vice Chairman Swati Pandey outlined the lease terms, indicating that NFC would lease the airport for a nominal Re 1 fee. MADC will supply essential facilities like the runway and compound wall, with ongoing work including runway recarpeting and compound wall construction. Additionally, terminal building repairs and modifications are underway. NFC will handle day-to-day maintenance, security, and Air Traffic Control (ATC), along with constructing aircraft parking hangars and other necessary facilities, as explained by Pandey.
Pandey highlighted Morwa Airport’s historical use for chartered flights since the 1960s despite its small size and limitations on expansion due to surrounding power plant chimneys. However, it perfectly suits NFC’s small aircraft needs, promising relief from congestion at Nagpur Airport. This expansion marks a crucial milestone for NFC, providing much-needed training space, facilitating efficient completion of flying hours and licenses for students. Establishing a second base at Morwa Airport is poised to bolster NFC’s capabilities, nurturing the aviation dreams of aspiring pilots.
