The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated the redevelopment of six squares in Nagpur to enhance traffic flow and mitigate congestion during peak hours. Ravindra Bundhade, Executive Engineer of Traffic at NMC, stated that the project aims to optimize the geometry of these squares to facilitate smoother vehicle movement.
As part of the redevelopment, the NMC is reworking the slopes and other traffic-related aspects at these squares. The first phase includes Shraddhanandpeth Square, Gangabai Ghat Square, Wardhaman Nagar Square, Gandhi Statue Square, Sevasadan Square, and Japanese Garden Square.
At squares like Shraddhanandpeth, where criss-cross movement is challenging due to existing road topography, adjustments are being made to correct the road levels. Additionally, the stretch of East High Court Road from Kriplani Turning to Subhash Nagar T-point near Ambazari overflow is being addressed, as it sits slightly higher than adjacent roads.
Bundhade highlighted the importance of assessing left-turn space during square redesign. If necessary, widening would prevent vehicle delays at traffic signals.
At Japanese Garden Square, there’s traffic jams during busy times because the roads from different directions are at different heights. To fix this, they’re making sure everyone can use the roads safely. They’re focusing on making wide sidewalks so people don’t walk on the road, like they do on crowded streets.
They will check if there are too many utility poles at the squares. If not needed, they’ll remove them. They’ve already made the traffic signal poles easier to see from far away. They’ll make sure there’s plenty of space for traffic to move smoothly and to stop jams caused by unnecessary overtaking.
