The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), renowned for its Amul brand, has declared a forthcoming increase in the price of fresh milk pouches by approximately Rs 2 per litre, set to take effect from June 3, 2024. This adjustment, affecting milk prices nationwide, follows a prolonged period since February 2023 during which Amul had not altered the price of fresh milk pouches in major markets.
The Rs 2 per litre rise in Amul milk equates to a 3-4% increase in the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), significantly lower than the average food inflation rate. The Federation attributes this price adjustment to the escalating overall operational and production costs in the milk industry.
According to a statement provided to CNBC-TV18, the Federation stated, “Our member unions have increased farmers’ price by approximately 6-8% compared to last year.” This move aligns with Amul’s longstanding policy of passing on nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the producers. The statement emphasized that the price revision aims to sustain remunerative milk prices for Amul’s dairy farmers and incentivize higher milk production.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), operating under the brand Milma, disclosed on June 1 its concerted efforts towards fortifying the state’s cooperative dairy sector and achieving self-sufficiency in milk production, as envisioned by the state government.
In an article commemorating World Milk Day, observed on June 1, Milma Chairman KS Mani underscored the imperative of enhancing productivity and supporting dairy farmers grappling with mounting input costs. He highlighted the state government’s implementation of various projects aimed at augmenting milk production and meeting domestic demand. Mani emphasized the pivotal role played by three-tier local self-government institutions in executing these schemes and enhancing productivity while safeguarding the welfare of farmers.
