The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the onset of the southwest monsoon in Maharashtra. Based on data released by the department, the monsoon’s northern boundary is currently traversing Ratnagiri and Solapur districts in Maharashtra, with its trajectory set to extend into Medhak district in Telangana.
The timely arrival of the southwest monsoon is crucial for the region’s kharif crops. Originating from the southern region, the monsoon has gained momentum, with the Arabian branch exhibiting increased strength. It has already enveloped districts including Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and portions of Solapur.
Weather department officials have issued a yellow alert for Pune city, forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in the coming days.
This year’s monsoon has exhibited an early onset compared to the previous year’s schedule. Typically entering Maharashtra around June 7 and covering the state by June 15, last year’s monsoon arrival was delayed until June 11 due to the formation of Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea, resulting in Pune experiencing a delayed onset on June 24.
IMD’s long-range forecast suggests favorable rainfall across most areas in Maharashtra this year. However, central Maharashtra may witness below-normal rainfall levels in June.
