Questions over education system
Is this the effect of unemployment or the ability of the degree holders? About 300 engineering degree holders and 1,300 post-graduates submitting applications for the post of Police Constable raises this question.
In Maharashtra over 17.76 lakh applications have been received for 17,471 posts. The physical tests for these applicants will begin on June 19. More than 41 per cent of the applicants are degree holders in engineering, law, management, post-graduates in science, business administration etc.
Adequate arrangements have been made to prevent malpractices in the written and physical tests. Earlier 177 candidates were arrested and 66 offences were registered during the recruitment drive. Copying using modern electronic gadgets, and presenting dummy candidates for physical tests are some of the major tactics used by the applicants.
Highly qualified candidates applying for these posts pose serious questions about the higher education system, teaching and learning methods, examination system, and aptitude of the students.
The objectives with which the National Education Policy was introduced may not yield the desired results if the approach of the students and their parents towards education is not changed. Getting higher marks is the only goal in the current system. Huge information is poured into the brains of the students. The students lack knowledge of applying the information given through teachers, private tutors and the Internet.
The tests conducted by various employers expose these students who hold degrees with very high marks. The data in the recruitment drive by the police department after all the tests are conducted should be an eye-opener for the entire society and academicians in particular.
