American Oncology Institute (AOI) in collaboration with Nangia Specialty Hospital in Nagpur has achieved remarkable success in performing advanced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures on four patients with hilar block, significantly improving their conditions. These procedures addressed complex cases involving jejunal cancer with liver metastases, hepatocellular carcinoma, and cholangiocarcinoma, providing cutting-edge medical care.
A 40-year-old male patient presented with a history of jaundice and abdominal pain, accompanied by vomiting and abdominal discomfort. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Atul Gawande, Gastroenterologist at AOI, the medical team performed advanced ERCP procedures on four patients to manage hilar block complications. In three patients with separated right and left ducts, two stents were placed successfully in each. In a particularly complex case, all three ducts were separated, necessitating the placement of three stents.
Dr Atul Gawande, Gastroenterologist, American Oncology Institute (AOI), Nagpur emphasized the significance of the procedures, “The success of these advanced ERCP procedures underscores our ability to manage complex biliary conditions effectively. By reducing bilirubin levels, we have opened up new avenues for these patients to receive further treatment.”
All patients had a history of jaundice, making chemotherapy initially unfeasible. Following ERCP stenting, their bilirubin levels dropped within an average of 10 days, allowing them to pursue further treatment options.
Dr Amit Dhawan, RCOO, American Oncology Institute (AOI), Nagpur, said, “The intricate nature of hilar block cases requires a high level of skill and precision. Our team’s dedication and proficiency in advanced endoscopy have made these successful outcomes possible, reflecting our commitment to patient care.”
Dr Hrushikesh Phate, Facility Director, American Oncology Institute (AOI), Nagpur, commented, “Our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a highly skilled medical team. The successful management of these cases demonstrates our capability to provide top-tier medical interventions, improving the quality of life for our patients.”
ERCP is a specialized procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts, such as blockages caused by stones or narrowing of the ducts. The ERCP procedure requires specialized training and usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete. The recent successful ERCP procedures at AOI highlight’s their commitment to using advanced medical technologies and expertise to improve patient outcomes.
