In response to safety concerns following a tragic incident in Pune, where a family was swept away, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken decisive steps to enhance safety measures at prominent lakes across the city.
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari has directed the installation of railings at three major lakes—Ambazari, Futala, and Gorewada—to restrict access to the water bodies. This decision comes amidst reports of increased risky behavior by visitors, especially during the monsoon season.
The recent incident at Pune’s Bhushi Dam prompted a comprehensive review by NMC officials. Following consultations with senior officials, Dr. Chaudhari emphasized the urgency of preventing similar incidents in Nagpur. Measures include placing warning boards to deter people from approaching the lake banks and advising against risky activities near water bodies.
Additionally, the NMC plans to deploy rescue boats manned by trained personnel at one lake, ensuring swift response capabilities in case of emergencies. The deployment of the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) at each lake aims to monitor and prevent disruptive behavior that could endanger visitors.
Dr. Chaudhari also urged NGOs to assist in raising awareness among citizens about safe practices during lake visits. “Monsoon is a time for enjoyment, but safety should be a priority,” he emphasized, appealing to residents to exercise caution when visiting the lakes.
Key officials including Shewta Banerjee, Superintending Engineer of Public Health Engineering, B P Chandankhede, Chief Fire Officer, and Veersen Tambe, In-charge of NDS, participated in the planning meeting to implement these preventive measures.
The NMC’s proactive measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of all visitors to Nagpur’s lakes during the monsoon season.
