In a noteworthy achievement, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has surpassed its property tax collection target for the last financial year by collecting a total of Rs 307 crore. For the current fiscal year, the demands have been set at Rs 350 crore, with a recovery target of Rs 330 crore.
Data from the NMC’s property tax department reveals that while the current year’s property tax collection stands at Rs 83.47 crore, outstanding tax dues amount to a substantial Rs 266.52 crore. This high demand is primarily due to pending tax arrears.
According to sources within the property tax department, the Asi Nagar zone has issued the highest demand of Rs 50.94 crore, with outstanding property taxes in the zone totaling Rs 42.41 crore, and current payments amounting to Rs 8.53 crore. Conversely, the Gandhibagh zone has the lowest target at Rs 8.38 crore, despite being a prominent commercial area, owing to the age and valuation of properties.
Following Asi Nagar, the Laxmi Nagar zone issued demands amounting to Rs 46.37 crore, placing it second in the list, while government properties accrued demands totaling Rs 44.02 crore, securing third place.
Earlier this year, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis introduced an amnesty scheme aimed at property tax defaulters, resulting in a significant uptake with over one lakh property tax holders benefiting. Under the scheme, 80 percent of penalties were waived, prompting deposit of Rs 70 crore into the NMC treasury. Excluding amnesty scheme figures, the NMC’s property tax department recorded earnings of Rs 237 crore.
This robust performance underscores NMC’s efforts to streamline revenue collection amidst varying tax demands across different zones of Nagpur city.
