In a bid to empower handloom textile weavers across Maharashtra, the Office of the Regional Deputy Commissioner of Textiles has announced a competition for the best designs in five traditional areas for the year 2024-25. Applications are being invited until July 19, 2024.
The competition aims to provide additional incentives to handloom textile weavers, encouraging innovation and excellence in their craft. According to Seema Pandey, Deputy Commissioner of Textiles Department, Nagpur region, eligible handloom weaver families are encouraged to apply for various benefits including free electricity up to 200 units per month, festival allowance schemes, reward schemes, and other handloom initiatives.
“As part of the integrated and sustainable Textile Policy 2023-28, this competition is pivotal in boosting the textile sector in Maharashtra,” Pandey highlighted.
The competition will focus on five traditional sectors: Paithani Saree, Himru Shawl, Karwat Kati, Ghongdi, and Khan Fabric. Cash prizes await the winners, with ₹20,000 for first place, ₹15,000 for second place, and ₹10,000 for third place.
Handloom textile weavers from Nagpur Division are invited to submit their designs to the office of the Regional Deputy Commissioner of Textiles located at New Administrative Building No. 2, B-Wing, 8th Floor, Civil Line, Nagpur.
