Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Dharmarao Baba Atram informed the Legislative Council on Friday that his department plans to issue an order banning the sale of energy drinks with high caffeine content within a 500-meter radius of schools across the State.
He provided this assurance in response to a query raised by independent legislator Satyajeet Tambe during the Question Hour.
“The FDA will soon issue an order banning the sale of energy drinks with high caffeine content within a 500-meter radius of schools in the State. Under the current regulations, caffeine content between 145 mg and 300 ml is permitted per liter in both carbonated and non-carbonated drinks,” Atram said.
Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe instructed Atram to compile a list of the drinks to be banned and distribute it to FDA officials across the State to ensure the effective implementation of the order.
