In a significant development for local commuters, the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) campus has been opened for vehicular traffic from Wednesday morning, allowing two-wheelers and emergency services to pass through designated routes. Though, the route was scheduled to open on Tuesday, however, due to incomplete work it was postponed.
The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Shashikant Satav, commenced with the DCP personally overseeing traffic flow during the morning hours. In an audio clip released by the DCP, he announced that vehicular traffic would be permitted during specific hours from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. However, no four-wheelers, with the exception of emergency vehicles, will be allowed access through this route.
The decision to open VNIT’s 1.2 km road exclusively for two-wheelers was made following an agreement with the VNIT management, a process that took nearly three days to finalize. To facilitate the entry of vehicles, a portion of VNIT’s compound wall opposite the Indian Oil Petrol Pump was demolished. The designated stretch, running from this point to Gate No. 3, will cater exclusively to two-wheelers, with strict prohibition on four-wheelers.
To ensure smooth and safe traffic flow, traffic police will deploy barricades and plastic cones at each junction along the route. Additionally, traffic movement may be briefly halted to ensure the safety of students crossing the road.
