The temporary tin structures installed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation along the Nag River embankment near Corporation Colony collapsed, revealing the poor quality of the flood prevention measures. Although no casualties or property damage were reported due to the collapse, it has rekindled the distressing memories of the previous year’s devastating flash flood among the residents.
The flash flood on September 23 of last year caused substantial damage to the retaining walls of the Nag River. This led to the submergence of several neighbouhoods downstream of the Ambazari Dam and along the river. Over 25 areas were affected, including Purohit Layout, Ambazari Layout, Kasturba Layout, Samata Layout, Yashwant Nagar, Daga Layout, Corporation Colony, Dandige Layout, and Shankar Nagar. The property damage totaled hundreds of crores.
Despite the extensive damage, the NMC failed to repair the damaged walls and instead installed temporary tin shades along several sections of the Nag River banks. On Thursday morning, a portion of the tin shade erected in the backyard of Prakash Solanki’s house in Corporation Colony collapsed, posing a threat to his property. Solanki promptly informed the officials of the NMC’s Dharampeth zone about the incident.
