The persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has successfully eradicated the rainfall deficit in Vidarbha, particularly benefiting the East Vidarbha region which had been grappling with deficient rainfall since the onset of the monsoon season.
East Vidarbha, experiencing a delayed monsoon onset this year unlike other parts of the region, saw its rainfall deficit finally eliminated due to widespread showers across the area. The absence of cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal during June and the first half of July had initially led to lower-than-normal monsoon precipitation in East Vidarbha.
As of July 21, Nagpur district recorded 457 mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal of 390.6 mm. Similarly, Bhandara and Gondia districts, which had faced significant rainfall deficits until mid-July, are now nearing normal levels. Bhandara received 466.2 mm compared to the normal 436.2 mm, while Gondia recorded 432.5 mm against the normal 483.6 mm.
Yavatmal district stands out with a substantial 42% excess rainfall, registering 492.6 mm compared to the normal 347.2 mm. Other districts including Buldhana (26% excess), Chandrapur (29% excess), Gadchiroli (21% excess), and Wardha (37% excess) have also received surplus monsoon rains.
The recent showers have not only replenished the deficit but also provided a significant boost to agricultural prospects and water reservoir levels across Vidarbha.
