Residents of Saraswati Vihar Colony and Gajanan Nagar in southwest Nagpur are grappling with an increasing nuisance caused by drunkards and miscreants who openly consume alcohol on the streets even in broad daylight. This situation has sparked outrage among the locals.
It has become a common sight for individuals to purchase alcohol and water bottles from nearby shops and engage in public drinking under the trees during the day. There is widespread speculation that this activity continues with the tacit approval of the police, turning the area into an open bar for these drinkers.
Residents are particularly frustrated with the increasing number of people drinking alcohol near the main entrance of Saraswati Vihar, either parked or standing by the roadside. Some residents have even reported seeing people drinking within their residential areas, making it difficult for women to step out safely. Women now have to venture out with caution due to the rising presence of hooligans and drunkards, who frequently break liquor bottles on the streets.
Afternoons and evenings see a surge in this nuisance, with public drinkers even urinating openly on the streets, adding to the disgraceful conditions. The situation is so severe that girls and women feel unsafe moving freely within their own locality.
Ironically, Pratap Nagar Police Station is just a stone’s throw away, yet the area remains plagued by this issue. Despite complaints to the police by the residents, no action has been taken, leading to calls for permanent police deployment in the area. If the situation remains unaddressed, the residents have threatened to stage a protest.
