The people in Ambazari Layout, Daga Layout, Gandhi Nagar, and Shankar Nagar are keenly watching the overflow level of the Ambazari Lake, giving the experience they had last year. The overflow level of at 316.29 meter and the water storage level has reached 316.18 meters as per the Nagpur Municipal Corporation record.
A large number of residents of these areas suffered because of the overflow of Ambazari, which was labelled as a fault on the part of the city planners. Wrong placement and design including the so-called beatification of Swami Vivekanand Memorial were allegedly found responsible for the deluge in civic areas.
Huge losses were suffered by people in these areas last year. They had to move to upper floors or had t take shelter at the residents of relatives or friends during the floods in July last year.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation has introduced an alarm system this year. However, the residents in these areas have already started taking precautionary measures. Last year heavy losses were incurred by the people, as gadgets including their fridge, television sets etc were submerged in the water. Many of them left their houses without even a dry cloth to wear. When the water receded they had to spend thousands of rupees to remove the sludge from their houses, and buy or repair their television sets and fridges.
With a hope that the predicted rains would not repeat the havoc this year, and having faith in the municipal authorities which claim to have taken steps to prevent flooding and resultant losses.
