A significant gathering of environmentalists in the city convened on Wednesday to strategize against increasing water logging caused by cement roads and the concerning decline of the city’s green cover. Under the banner of Green Nagpur, they formulated a detailed plan of action.
The group decided to initiate their efforts by submitting memorandums to municipal commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) chairman Sanjay Meena, urging immediate action on these pressing issues. Should the authorities fail to respond adequately, the environmentalists resolved to convene a public hearing scheduled for August.
Anusuya Kale Chhabrani, a prominent environmentalist, highlighted the legal backing for such actions under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, emphasizing citizens’ rights to hold public hearings. “During these hearings, we will invite the municipal commissioner, NIT chairman, and district collector to address the grievances of the people and present their perspectives,” she explained. Chhabrani also noted preparations to involve a retired High Court judge to preside over the hearing in case the invited officials decline to participate.
Additionally, the environmentalists addressed the critical issue of dwindling water bodies within the city, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding the local environment.
