The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the revised NEET-UG 2024 results and the list of top scorers after the Supreme Court’s order on Tuesday to retract the compensatory marks given to a specific group of students for a Physics question.
Initially, the NTA awarded extra marks to some students who answered a Physics question incorrectly due to an error in their old Class 12 NCERT science textbook. However, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that only the one correct answer would be accepted, and no marks would be granted for other responses.
A student had previously noted that “Question No. 29” in the Physics section had two possible correct answers, whereas only one was intended to be correct.
The Supreme Court directed the Director of IIT Delhi to assemble a team of three experts and submit a report on the correct answer for the specific Physics question by noon the next day. Based on IIT Delhi’s findings, the court later ruled that for the Physics question on atomic theory, marks would be awarded for only one answer: option No. 4.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had previously stated that the final results for NEET UG 2024 would be released within two days, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s observations.
The court ruled that only one correct answer out of the four options would be considered valid. Consequently, students who initially scored a perfect 720/720 will lose four marks.
The court also rejected several petitions requesting the cancellation and retest of the NEET UG 2024 exam. Chief Justice Chandrachud observed that there was no evidence of systemic leaks or other malpractices related to the exam.
The NTA has faced significant political controversy and student protests over alleged widespread malpractices, including question paper leaks and impersonation during the NEET UG 2024 test held on May 5. When the results were announced on June 4, they drew attention as 67 candidates were declared as AIR 1. The exam, conducted on May 5, had 13,31,321 female candidates, 9,96,393 male candidates, and 17 transgender candidates.
