The Ambazari Lake started overflowing on Sunday morning. The municipal authorities had started pumping out water from the lake since yesterday. The method used made the civic authorities a laughing stock.
Residents of areas affected by the Ambazari overflow has already shifted their valuables on the upper floors. Besides the enthusiasm of youngsters eager to enjoy the overflow, fear gripped the residents in Daaga Layout, Shankar Nagar, Gandhi Nagar etc. Many of them suffered huge losses during the heavy rains and Ambazari overflow on September 23 last year.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation informed through social media that Ambazari Lake started overflowing. NMC had started cleaning drainages and nullahs flowing across the city. They also called the cement road network in the city another major reason for flooding in the city.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for the region. Nagpurians have been experiencing drizzle since yesterday.
Gondia and Bhandara districts in East Vidarbha received very heavy rains. The Wainganga River is overflowing. Out of 33 gates of Gosekhurd Dam, 22 have been opened up to a half meter, releasing 3051.75 Qsecs of water. Villagers in the banks of the river and major canals have been alerted.
Gondia District, which received 577.6 mm of rain up to July 27 last year, got 634 mm this year. The average rains was 112.6 percent adding to the worries of the farmers. Besides affecting the crops the top fertile soil is washed away in the floods. The rains eluded the region till the second week of July and made roaring entry to break records in merely eight days. East Vidarbha being a paddy-growing region, the farmers can sustain heavy rains.
The Itiadoh Dam is full to its brim. The District Collector performed the ‘Jal Pujan’ at the dam. The dam helps in irrigating agricultural lands in Gondia and Gadchiroli districts.
Gadchiroli districts also received heavy rains. Many parts of the district lost connectivity through roads.
