Students who have enjoyed free access to the Kasturba Library in Sadar, Nagpur for the past 26 years are now facing an unexpected demand for fees from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. This sudden decision has provoked significant anger among the students, leading to appeals for the administration to reassess its position.
Many students, who depend on the library for their studies, are struggling to afford the new fees and are requesting an exemption from these charges. Shailesh Sankhe, president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in Nagpur, has expressed his support for the students.
Compounding the issue are the poor conditions of the library, including unclean restrooms and a lack of basic amenities. Despite these deficiencies, students are now being asked to pay fees, which many find ironic and unjust. In the past, students have even contributed funds to buy dustbins for the library.
The municipal corporation’s decision to impose fees is perceived as unfair, and students have warned of potential protests if their concerns are not addressed by officials. They have indicated a readiness to take to the streets if necessary to advocate for their rights.
