In the first six months of 2024, Nagpur has seen 110 fatalities, including 14 women, from 337 road accidents, according to information obtained through an RTI request from the Accident Cell of Nagpur Police.
The RTI, filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar, sought data on road accident fatalities in Nagpur over the past six years. The findings reveal a troubling trend on the city’s roads.
From 2018 to June 30, 2024, a total of 761 fatal accidents were reported across Nagpur, leading to the deaths of 676 men and 113 women. These accidents also left 121 men and 65 women injured.
Serious accidents during this period totaled 1,297, resulting in injuries to 1,219 men and 357 women. Additionally, 930 minor accidents caused injuries to 811 men and 317 women, as revealed by the RTI data.
Nagpur has been experiencing a worrying rise in both the number of accidents and related deaths. The year 2023 saw the highest number of accidents, with 604 incidents leading to 152 deaths and 597 injuries. Alarmingly, in just the first half of 2024, the city has already recorded 337 accidents, resulting in 110 deaths and 293 serious injuries.
Police officials attribute the majority of these accidents to human error, citing drunk driving and poor road conditions as significant contributing factors to the increasing number of incidents.
