Organ donation is the selfless act of giving one’s organs or tissues to save or improve the lives of others. It is a noble gesture that can bring hope, comfort, and a second chance to individuals awaiting transplantation. Organ donation can save up to 8 lives. Increasing donations decreases wait times for life-saving transplants. There are Two Types of Living Donation & Deceased Donation. Living Donation means donating organs like kidney, liver lobes while alive & Deceased Donation means Donating organs after death, typically after brain death or cardiac death. There are some Myths and Facts about Organ Donation which are as follow:
· Myth -Age,health, or medical history disqualifies me from donating.
· Fact-Most individuals can donate, regardless of age or medical history.
· Myth- Donation disfigures the body.
· Fact- Surgical techniques ensure minimal scarring and respect for the donor’s body.
· Myth- Donation costs the family money.
· Fact- All costs are covered by the recipient or the transplant center.
Dr. Suryashree Pandey,Kidney Transplant Expert, Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur said that, As the world comes together to observe World Organ Donation Day, we stand united in raising awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation. This day serves as a vital reminder of the profound difference one individual can make by choosing to become an organ donor.Kidney disease affects millions across the country, with many patients relying on dialysis as a temporary solution while waiting for a transplant. Unfortunately, the demand for donor kidneys far exceeds the available supply, leading to long waiting times and, in many cases, the loss of lives while waiting for a suitable organ. About five lakh people die in India every year for need of transplant. More than 80% of people awaiting a transplant need a kidney. According to the World Health Organisation, only around 0.01% of people in India donate their organs after death. One donor can save up to eight lives and can improve many more lives by donating corneas, tissues, heart valves, blood vessels, skin and bones. By pledging to donate, you offer a second chance at life to those in desperate need. Organ donation is a gift that transcends life itself, fostering hope, healing, and the promise of a brighter future. A complex interplay of factors including lack of public awareness, cultural and religious beliefs, inefficient hospital systems, legal and ethical barriers, insufficient infrastructure, financial constraints and psychological barriers contribute to shortage of cadaver organ donation in India.
Dr.Gunjan Loney,Bone Marrow Transplant Expert, Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur said that,Bone marrow donation is the procedure to obtain blood-forming cells (stem cells) for bone marrow transplant. Donating bone marrow doesn’t hurt and may cure someone who has blood cancer (Leukaemia, Myeloma, Lymphoma) or a blood disorder( Aplastic Anaemia, Sickle cell diseases, Thalassemia) . Anyone can volunteer to donate bone marrow, but all donors must meet certain health requirements.. Our bone marrow is the soft and spongy liquid tissue in the center of some of Our bones. Every day, Our bone marrow makes more than 200 billion new blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.. In a bone marrow transplant, stem cells from healthy bone marrow replace unhealthy bone marrow. The challenge is finding a match. Blood tests are done on prospective donors and recipients for HLA typing. About 30% of all people who need a transplant find a matching donor from someone in their immediate family. The remaining 70% rely on finding matching donors from someone other than a close family member. Doctors perform some tests to confirm if you are healthy to donate bone marrow.
Dr.Piyush Marudwar(Liver Disease Expert),Dr.Suryashree Pandey(Kidney Transplant Expert),Dr. Gunjan Loney(Bone Marrow Transplant Expert) appealed to become an Organ Donor. This World Organ Donation Day, we urge everyone to have conversations with their families about organ donation, to register as donors, and to spread the message of generosity. By taking these steps, we can reduce the waiting lists, save countless lives and create a legacy of compassion.
