The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike for 24 hours on August 17 in protest to the rape and killing of a PG student that occurred at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The doctors will withdraw services at 6 am on August 17 and end at 6 am on August 18.
The decision to withdraw services came after escalating tension after a mob vandalised the hospital and the area where the victim was found on August 15.
The authorities called on the authorities to ensure the safety of the healthcare workers, particularly women.
During the 24-hour strike, essential services will be maintained. The OPD will not function and elective surgeries will be postponed.
