In response to the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) nationwide call for a withdrawal of services, doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), AIIMS, and the Ayurvedic College in Nagpur have pledged their support. The protest is being organized following public outrage over the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor, which has led to widespread demonstrations across the country.
As part of the protest, a candle march will be held on Friday evening, starting from Samvidhan Square in Nagpur. Medical professionals from various institutions are expected to participate, demonstrating their solidarity and calling for justice. This march is a significant expression of the medical community’s rising frustration and demands for safety.
The IMA has declared that from 6 am on Saturday, August 17, to 6 am on Sunday, doctors of modern medicine across India will suspend several services. While essential care in casualty departments will continue, routine outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries will remain suspended. The IMA emphasized that the protest is intended to raise awareness of the increasing violence and threats faced by healthcare professionals.
