On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, the Nagpur City Traffic Police launched a rigorous crackdown on traffic violations, issuing over 5,000 challans across the city. The operation, aimed at promoting road safety, led to the collection of ₹25,53,700 in fines.
Among the various violations, drunk driving topped the list with 2,669 cases, followed closely by helmet violations, where 1,897 motorists were fined under section 129/177 of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA). The police also recorded 266 cases of motorists using mobile communication devices while driving, resulting in penalties under section 184(C) MVA.
Other key violations observed during the crackdown included:
- Parking on roads: 135 cases under section 122/177 MVA.
- Carrying excess passengers: 184 cases under section 194A MVA.
- Failure to stop before the stop line: 51 cases under MMVR 237/177 MVA.
- Triple seat violations: 178 cases under section 128/177 MVA.
- Fancy number plates: 29 cases under section 51/50 CMVR.
Additionally, the police penalized 60 drivers for not wearing seat belts, while heavy vehicles entering restricted zones resulted in 14 cases under section 199/177 CMVR.
