Despite the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s ban on the stocking, sale, and purchase of plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, enforcing this prohibition—particularly in terms of transporting the banned idols—continues to be a huge challenge. Announced on August 13, the NMC’s ban seeks to minimize environmental impact by discouraging the use of non-biodegradable PoP idols.
However, the civic body has not yet established a concrete strategy to prevent the entry of banned idols into the city. To tackle this issue, the NMC has requested the assistance of the Nagpur city police. Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari stressed that dealers who violate the NMC’s ban on PoP idols will face severe penalties.
