The Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which usually supplies 220 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water to Nagpur city, has been providing only 190 MLD over the past three days due to severe flooding in the Kanhan River.
The reduction in water supply has particularly impacted areas served by the Kanhan Feeder Main pipeline. The Kanhan River is currently overflowing, leading to the opening of all 16 gates of the Navegaon Khairy Dam because of excessive rainfall in the upstream Satpura Valley.
As a result, the pumps in Dry Well No.1 (DW-1) on the right bank of the river are submerged in mud and sand, making it impossible to draw water. The pumps will remain out of operation until the water level decreases enough to allow an excavator to clear the submerged suction pipes and restore DW-1 to working condition.
According to the Water Resources Department (WRD-Irrigation), the dam gates of the Navegaon Khairy Dam are expected to be closed on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Water supply is anticipated to return to normal shortly after this.
The following areas will be affected by the reduced water supply:
Ashi Nagar Zone: Binaki 1, 2 & 3; Indora 1 & 2; Nari; Nara; Nara NIT; Uppalwadi; Bezonbagh; Gamdoor; Jaswant DT
Satranjipura Zone: Shanti Nagar; Vinobha Bhave Nagar; Kalamna NIT; Bastarwadi 1A, 1B, and 2
