Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has introduced a significant relief measure for over 94,284 consumers in Nagpur district. These consumers, whose electricity connections were permanently disconnected due to outstanding bills, will benefit from a ₹61.62 crore waiver in interest and late payment charges under MSEDCL’s new Abhay Scheme 2024.
The scheme, which began on September 1, 2024, was launched following the directive of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The initiative aims to provide much-needed relief to consumers by offering them an opportunity to clear their dues without facing further legal action. Dilip Dodke, Chief Engineer of MSEDCL’s Nagpur Circle, has urged eligible consumers to take advantage of this scheme.
In line with a Supreme Court ruling, property owners, buyers, or occupants are legally required to settle any outstanding electricity bills. However, rather than resorting to immediate legal enforcement, MSEDCL has opted to introduce this amnesty program, encouraging consumers to clear their dues with significant penalty reductions.
The scheme is specifically available to domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers across Maharashtra who had their power supply permanently disconnected by March 31, 2024, due to unpaid bills. It does not, however, apply to agricultural consumers. The scheme is available until November 30, 2024.
MSEDCL is owed a total of ₹187.52 crore in principal dues, ₹2.37 crore in interest, and ₹59.25 crore in late payment charges from these 94,284 consumers in Nagpur district. To ease the financial burden on these consumers, MSEDCL will waive ₹61.62 crore in interest and late payment charges.
Consumers participating in the scheme will be required to pay 30% of their outstanding principal bill upfront, with the remaining 70% payable in six installments. Those who settle their entire overdue bill in a single payment will receive an additional 10% discount if they are domestic, commercial, or other low-tension consumers, while high-tension industrial and commercial consumers will receive a 5% discount.
How to Avail the Scheme:
Consumers can access the Amnesty Scheme online by visiting www.mahadiscom.in/wss/wss or through MSEDCL’s mobile app. For further assistance, consumers can call the toll-free numbers 1912, 18002333435, or 18002123435. After making payments under the scheme, consumers will be eligible to restore their regular electricity connection. Alternatively, they can apply for a new connection at the same address by submitting the necessary documents.
