In recent years, students have grown increasingly disillusioned with municipal schools, but the introduction of English medium schools has rejuvenated interest, evidenced by long queues for admissions. The six English medium schools across various assembly constituencies currently offer 353 seats, yet have received 825 applications.
The Akanksha Foundation has been instrumental in this development. In response to the high demand, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary has announced plans to expand the number of English medium schools.
Launched in 2021 by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), these schools have been met with substantial enthusiasm. English medium classes are available at Babhulvan Municipal English Medium School (East Nagpur), Ramnagar Municipal English Medium School (West Nagpur), Rani Durgavati English Medium School (North Nagpur), Late Baburao Bobde Municipal English Medium School (South-West Nagpur), and Late Gopalraoji Motghare (Khadaan) (Central Nagpur). Admission to these schools is free.
Last year, admissions were limited to Junior KG and Senior KG. This year, the scope has been extended to include Grade 1 and 2. Despite this, the number of applications—825—far exceeds the available seats, leaving 472 applicants without placements. Commissioner Dr. Chaudhary emphasized a commitment to providing quality English education and is considering increasing the number of schools to accommodate more students. Education officer Sadhana Sayam has indicated that measures are being implemented to enhance the status of municipal schools.
