In a significant move to enhance women’s safety, the Nagpur Police have announced plans to install 1,100 new CCTV cameras across various locations in the city. This initiative is aimed at addressing crimes against women and improving surveillance in areas identified as high-risk.
Recent incidents, including a case in Hingna where a man was arrested for repeatedly harassing minor schoolgirls, highlight the pressing need for expanded surveillance. The city police have identified several poorly lit areas where women are particularly vulnerable and will soon increase CCTV coverage in these zones.
The installation of the new cameras will cover areas under the jurisdiction of city police, metro rail, and the Smart City project. Currently, Nagpur has 3,300 operational CCTV cameras. However, a troubling 1,200 of these cameras have been out of order for some time, impeding crime investigations. The maintenance of these cameras, contracted to L&T, has faced issues such as cable damage and vandalism, raising concerns and calls for an investigation into potential corruption.
