In a significant move towards green energy, Central Railway has made remarkable progress in harnessing solar power, with the Nagpur Division taking the lead. Out of 205 solar panel installations across Central Railway’s five divisions, Nagpur Division stands out with 58 installations—the highest in Maharashtra.
This initiative has not only reduced carbon emissions but also resulted in substantial energy cost savings. During the financial year 2023-24, Central Railway’s solar panels generated a total of 8.04 million units (MU) of power. The Nagpur Division alone contributed 0.09 MU, which equates to a reduction of 76.80 tonnes of carbon footprint and a savings of Rs. 10 lakh.
Across all divisions, including Mumbai, Bhusaval, Pune, and Solapur, the solar power initiative has collectively saved Central Railway Rs. 4.62 crore in energy costs. This effort aligns with Indian Railways’ mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, reflecting Central Railway’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
