Following heavy rainfall in its catchment area on Wednesday, Khindsi Lake in Ramtek taluka has finally overflowed. The excess water started over- flowing from the spill-way and entering in the Sur river as a result of the intense downpour in the region.
The 5 km-long spillway on the eastern side of Khindsi Lake was built by the British in 1923. Khindsi Lake was formed by damming the Sur and Kapila rivers in Ramtek taluka. To facilitate the creation of this lake, the administration relocated and rehabilitated 17 villages situated within the lake’s designated area.
Raju Bhongle, Deputy Engineer of the Pench Irrigation Sub Division, Water Resource Department, Ramtek, stated that the total catchment area of Khindsi Lake spans 21,300 hectares, with a total water storage capacity of 103.09 million cubic meters (MM3). The lake’s Full Reservoir Level (FRL) is 316.865 meters, and on Wednesday, it surpassed this level, reaching 316.870 meters.
Due to overflow of water from the spillway, the district administration issued a warning to the villages located along the banks of the Sur River. The administration urged villagers to be alert and avoid going near the river.
