Khaparkheda, just 17 kilometers from Nagpur, witnessed an unexpected bonanza on Thursday as an Axis Bank ATM dispensed more money than requested, marking the second occurrence of such an anomaly. The ATM, which started malfunctioning on Wednesday night, continued to over-disburse funds until around 12:30 PM when police intervention ended the spree.
Locals quickly seized the opportunity, with many withdrawing excess funds by borrowing ATM cards from friends and family. Some even transferred the extra cash back into their accounts via online banking, only to return to the ATM for further withdrawals.
This incident followed a similar event on June 15, 2022, when the same ATM dispensed ₹2,000 instead of the requested ₹1,000. The latest glitch was attributed to an error in which ₹500 notes were mistakenly loaded into the tray intended for ₹100 notes, leading to an over-disbursement of cash.
The ATM’s maintenance, outsourced to a private company, is under review by Axis Bank, which has pledged to address the issue.
