As Ganeshotsav approaches, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the traffic police have intensified efforts to ensure a smooth celebration. The NMC is focused on repairing damaged roads, while the police have implemented special traffic regulations to manage congestion and prevent accidents in busy areas. In anticipation of heavy traffic and increased movement of devotees, the NMC’s hotmix department is actively working to fill potholes across the city.
Executive Engineer Ajay Dahake stated that the department has reallocated resources, including jet and insta patchers, to repair roads along major routes used for transporting Ganesha idols. “Our goal is to ensure the roads are in the best possible condition so that devotees can travel comfortably,” Dahake said.
Between July 8 and August 31, the hotmix department reported filling 2,535 potholes. A recent survey identified an additional 714 potholes, which are now being prioritized for repairs. The NMC has implemented a zone-wise approach to expedite the repair process, ensuring that all areas of the city are addressed.
In addition to road repairs, traffic management has become a top priority due to the expected influx of devotees and increased sales of Ganpati idols, especially around Bhawsar Square and Badkas Square. To address potential traffic bottlenecks, DCP (Traffic) Shashikant Satao has invoked Sections 115, 116, and 117 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1908, and issued a notification enforcing specific traffic regulations.
These measures will be in effect from 6 am on September 7 to 7 am on September 8. DCP Satao emphasized that traffic officers will be present on the ground to implement any necessary changes or additional diversions, ensuring minimal disruptions. Both the road repairs and traffic regulations are essential for managing the increased vehicular movement and maintaining public safety during the festival.
