The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited’s (MSEDCL’s) Nagpur Division uncovered 2,131 cases of electricity theft between April and August 2024, causing a financial loss of Rs 3.94 crore. Among the cases, 1,695 were reported in Nagpur district and 436 in Wardha. Offenders face legal action under the Indian Electricity Act.
The campaign, led by Chief Engineer Dilip Dodke, found 907 instances of direct theft, 160 cases of unauthorized use, and 1,064 incidents of meter tampering.
In Nagpur city, 566 direct thefts and 465 meter tampering cases resulted in a ₹2.47 crore loss, with ₹18.37 lakh collected in fines. Nagpur rural recorded 239 thefts and 295 tampering cases, leading to a ₹74.13 lakh loss, with ₹9.17 lakh in fines.
Wardha district saw 304 tampering cases and 102 thefts, causing ₹73.16 lakh in losses, with ₹10.21 lakh fined to consumers.
Special Campaign on High-Loss Lines:
MSEDCL is also targeting high-loss power lines in Nagpur and Wardha, inspecting 60 lines. This campaign has revealed 177 additional theft cases, with 43 consumers applying for new connections.
