Two people were killed when a two-storey house collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Gondia, Maharashtra, early Tuesday morning, according to a report.
A two-storey house in Rameshwaram Colony, Fulchurtola area of Gondia city, collapsed early in the morning, killing two people, said District Disaster Management Officer Rajan Choubey.
Heavy rains have battered the district over the last 24 hours, with the Kamtha circle in Gondia Tehsil recording the highest rainfall at 292.3 mm. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a red alert for the district for the next 24 hours.
Teams from the Fire Brigade and police arrived at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations, the report said, also noting that several areas in the city were flooded.
The district disaster relief team rescued three people stranded at a temple in Sirpur, Deori, while a petrol tanker was swept away by the strong currents of the Bagh River. Several roads were closed, and the heavy rains have caused damage to houses and destroyed crops across many areas of the district, according to the report.
In the 24 hours ending at 8 am, Deori received 210.3 mm of rain, followed by Gondia with 207.9 mm, Salekasa with 195.9 mm, and Sadak Arjuni with 187 mm.
