Residents of Thawre Colony, Indora, and Ashok Nagar in North Nagpur are facing serious health issues due to contaminated drinking water. Residents have complained that their tap water is discolored and smells foul, suggesting it may be mixed with sewage. Despite lodging complaints with the Orange City Waterworks (OCW) helpline and the NMC’s civic complaint portal, the problem has not been resolved for over a week.
As per the local daily report, NMC representative Ratnakar Panchbai said that a new pipeline is being installed to address the issue. He attributed the contamination to illegal connections and old, rusty pipes. “We are working to fix leaks and prevent further contamination,” Panchbai said.
“The work in Thawre Colony is expected to take about a month to complete, while the project in Ashok Nagar has already been finished,” he said. Sanjay Indurkar, a resident of Thawre Colony, said his family has fallen sick due to the bad water. “My family had diarrhoea, stomach ache, and skin infections. The NMC must act quickly,” he said.
“Contamination of water is a repeated complaint. Similar complaints were made in June as well. My three-year-old son fell sick repeatedly with stomach ailments. He has been vomiting for 2 days and has high fever. The NMC should solve the water contamination problem permanently,” said Madhavi Khobragade, a resident.
Another resident, Niranjan Gajbhiye, added, “My niece has been vomiting for 2 days and has high fever.”
“Last year, a girl died because of dengue caused by the carelessness of NMC and the Housing Society. The NMC is specifically careless towards the poor and marginalised areas of North Nagpur,” said Archana Sharad Shende. She also mentioned that her grandson fell ill due to impure water. “People in our colony are falling sick, especially kids. This is a serious matter and should be resolved immediately,” she added.
