Probably for the first time in this decade, Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) earned a profit of over Rs 16.86 crores. Out of the 31 divisions 20 earned the profit in the month of August. MSRTC Managing Director Dr Madhav Kusekar congratulated all the employees and officers for the achievement. He also advised them to continue with the good work and earn profits for the Corporation, which has been suffering losses for over nine years.
MSRTC suffered huge losses during the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by a major strike by the employees which lasted for about six months. The smooth services started in May 2022. The most difficult task was to bring back the passengers back to the state transport buses. Various incentives were offered including the half ticket for women and free travel for passengers above 75 years of age. Those accompanying seniors and women got attracted to the state transport buses. About 54 lakh people travel every day through the ST buses.
Dr Kusekar said that the MSRTC earned a profit of Rs 16,86,61,000 in August 2024.
MSRTC took various steps to reduce the percentage of non-functional buses from 12 percent to 6 percent and train drivers to save fuel and increase mileage by 0.52 Km.
Dr Kurekar said that plans to further improve the efficiency are being prepared.
