Despite the Election Department’s assurances of implementing measures to boost voter turnout, recent issues have cast doubt on its effectiveness. A significant problem has emerged where hundreds of voter ID cards failed to reach their intended recipients due to incorrect addresses. Approximately 700 cards sent by the Election Commission to the General Post Office (GPO) were undeliverable due to address errors, highlighting potential flaws in the department’s operations.
During the recent Lok Sabha elections, numerous voters reported problems related to missing voter ID cards and names absent from the electoral rolls. In response, the Election Department initiated a voter registration campaign, which is currently ongoing as the assembly elections approach. However, the ongoing failure to deliver hundreds of voter ID cards due to incorrect addresses poses a serious concern that needs urgent attention to ensure effective delivery and voter participation.
Furthermore, during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, thousands of voters discovered that their names were missing from the voter list. Additionally, there were reports of names of deceased individuals still appearing on the list at some polling stations, underscoring systemic issues within the voter registration process.
