Chennai: In a landmark announcement, the Film Federation of India revealed that Kiran Rao’s directorial venture Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. The apex body, responsible for choosing the country’s contender for the prestigious Oscars, made the announcement during an event held in Chennai.
Produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, Laapataa Ladies features a talented cast including Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Nitanshi Goel. Set in rural India, the film tells the story of two brides who accidentally switch places during a train journey, offering a heartwarming narrative of empowerment and resilience.
Kiran Rao on the Film’s Oscar Entry
Reflecting on the selection, Kiran Rao shared her excitement in a conversation with PTI: “My dream would be fulfilled if it [Laapataa Ladies] made it to the Oscars. It’s a process, and I’m hoping it will be considered. I’m sure the best film will go, whoever they choose in the scheme of things.”
The film has already made waves in various influential circles, including being screened at the Supreme Court of India. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud arranged a special screening, which Rao described as an incredible honor. “It’s the vision and foresight of our Chief Justice to screen a film like this, to start conversations on gender parity, gender equality, and women’s empowerment,” she said.
Rao expressed gratitude for the unexpected attention the film received from the highest judicial body, adding that the endorsement brought the film to a wider audience. “It really made a difference, as audiences felt there was merit in watching Laapataa Ladies,” she remarked.
