Eight new medical colleges in Maharashtra have been formally approved. The new medical colleges will be opened in Vidarbha’s Gadchiroli, Amravati, Washim, Buldana, Bhandara, and Hingoli, and in other regions, Jalna and Ambarnath. The medical colleges will have a sanctioned intake capacity of 100 seats each.
A recent circular regarding this development was issued on 1/10/24
With the approval of the eight new medical colleges, Maharashtra will have 35 medical colleges imparting education at the MBBS level. The total number of seats for MBBS will be 4850, which would restrict aspiring doctors from going out of the state or country. The colleges are being opened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambition to start one medical college in every district. The efforts of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and Medical Education Minister Hasant Mushrif, were supported by the union ministers for medical education.
The colleges will be Rs 403 crores each for developing infrastructure and required equipment. The procedure for issuing tenders for construction of buildings is in the final stages.
