Centre grants status to 12 languages
Finally, Marathi has been granted the Noble or Classic Language status by the Government of India. The decision came on the first day of Navratri on Thursday to the joy of 12 crore Marathi people in Maharashtra.
The Government of India took the decision on Thursday granting the status to 12 languages including Marathi, Pali, Bangla, Asomia and Prakrit. The decision was shared by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on X handle.
The demand has been made for the last several years. Many litterateurs and political leaders made efforts to get the status for Marathi. References were made to important books like Leelacharitra, Dmyaneshwari, Viveksindhu etc. Various scholars to prove Marathi be a classic language.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Cultural Affairs Minister Gajendra Sinh Shekhawat.
