The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for new postgraduate degrees at four medical colleges in Maharashtra, including two government institutions. This approval will add 68 seats for students seeking postgraduate studies in fields such as paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and pathology. With this addition, the total number of postgraduate seats in Maharashtra’s government and private medical colleges will rise to 2,371.
The newly approved postgraduate seats will be distributed across four medical colleges in Maharashtra: Terna Medical College, Navi Mumbai (22 seats), Prakash Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Islampur (12 seats), ESI-PGIMSR, Mumbai (17 seats), and NMMC General Hospital, Nerul (17 seats).
Medical colleges in Maharashtra had submitted a proposal to the central government, seeking the addition of around 172 seats to address the rising demand. “We are expecting more seats will get approval in the coming days,” said an activist.
Each year, students face challenges securing admission to postgraduate medical courses due to limited seats. In the previous academic year, government colleges offered 1,499 seats, while private institutions provided 804, making competition fierce for aspiring medical professionals.
The new colleges that have been granted approval will need to secure affiliation with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) before they can admit students.
The newly approved colleges must obtain affiliation with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) before they can begin admitting students. This affiliation is an important step to ensure they meet academic standards and can offer the newly sanctioned postgraduate seats.
