In view of the upcoming Assembly elections, District Collector and Election Officer Dr. Vipin Itankar has directed all licensed firearm holders in the region to deposit their weapons at the nearest police station. The order, which aligns with the enforcement of the model code of conduct from October 15 to November 25, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful election process.
According to the directive, issued on October 17, firearm holders are required to surrender their weapons within three days. This action is being taken in compliance with Section 21 of the Arms Act of 1959 to maintain law and order during the election period.
Certain exemptions apply to communities with traditional rights to carry weapons, as long as they do not engage in violent activities or disturb public peace. However, if these individuals are found to be involved in any disruptive activities, the district authorities are authorized to confiscate their weapons.
The directive does not apply to police and security personnel involved in maintaining public order, as well as those guarding banks and other critical establishments. However, it is the responsibility of these institutions to ensure that their security personnel do not misuse their firearms during the election period.
In cases where exemption from the order is sought, individuals may submit a request through their local police station to the District Screening Committee. The order will remain in effect until November 25, and non-compliance will lead to legal action against violators.
