Addressing the issue of vacant teaching positions in government medical colleges in Vidarbha, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the State Government to provide relevant information regarding these vacancies.
While hearing a public interest litigation, a division bench made up of Justice Avinash Gharote and Justice Mukulika Jawalkar ordered the state government to submit the information by October 24.
During the hearing, amicus curiae Adv. Anup Gilda reported that there were numerous vacancies for assistant teachers in government medical colleges throughout Vidarbha. To manage the workload, these colleges were resorting to hiring teachers on a contractual basis.
Adv. Gilda stated that students were suffering due to the lack of permanent faculty in medical colleges. He requested directions for the State Government to fill the vacancies, considering the interests of the medical student community. Acknowledging this information, the court expressed concern about the situation and sought details from the State Government regarding vacant posts in government-run medical colleges in Vidarbha, including how long these positions have remained unfilled. The court also clarified that the code of conduct for Assembly elections would not be violated concerning regular medical purchases, such as medicines and equipment for government hospitals. Senior advocate Firdos Mirza and Adv. Deepak Thakre represented the State Government.
Committee Established to Address Class III and IV Vacancies
The court was informed that the State Government had formed a committee to fill Class III and Class IV positions in all government medical colleges across the state. The court welcomed this decision and urged that the committee’s first meeting take place this month. Previously, the court had directed the government to fill all vacant Class III and IV posts by the end of the year and to submit a compliance report in the first week of January.
