The city will celebrate a “Clean Diwali, Auspicious Diwali” from October 21 to 31 as part of an initiative by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in accordance with directives from the Central government.
Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari encouraged citizens to take part in various activities organized across all ten NMC zones. A “Deep Clean Diwali” drive is scheduled to take place in different wards from October 21 to 24.
On October 25, cleanliness campaigns will be held at all 19 crematoriums. From October 26 to 28, waste collected during the Diwali cleaning efforts will be brought to the NMC’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) centers. Sanitation workers will be recognized for their contributions on October 27, and on October 28, 59 statues of notable figures will be cleaned.
On October 29 and 30, households are encouraged to use decorative lamps and create rangolis that convey messages of cleanliness. The NMC’s information, education, and communication (IEC) team will promote eco-friendly Diwali celebrations in local markets. Additionally, the NMC has established 130 waste collection centers throughout the city for citizens to deposit recyclable items like clothing, e-waste, and plastic. Those who actively participate will receive ‘Thank You’ stickers on their homes, recognising their efforts.
According to Deputy Commissioner Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, the collected waste will be processed by NGOs to transform it into useful products.
“This campaign aims to engage citizens in maintaining cleanliness during the festive season while promoting sustainable practices and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives,” said additional municipal commissioner Aanchal Goyal.
After Diwali, a special cleanliness drive in the open ground too will be organised from Nov 4 to Nov 7.
