In a major renovation project, Central Railway has taken up specialized repairs on Bridge No. 1042-1, a 110-year-old stone masonry bridge located in the heart of Nagpur city, near the Itarsi end of the yard. Constructed in 1913, this historic bridge plays a crucial role in the region, channeling municipal water throughout the year and acting as a primary yard drainage system. The restoration work aims to extend the bridge’s service life, improve water flow, and strengthen its structure to ensure safety.
*Project Details and Specialized Work*
With the passage of time, the bridge has seen issues like mortar spalling, stone displacement, cavity formation, and joint weakening. To address these challenges, Central Railway has launched a comprehensive restoration effort involving several specialized techniques and advanced equipment, including PC-10 for waterway cleaning, CPG machines, and screw jacks for realigning stones. Additionally, RCC jacketing and steel frame strengthening will be used to reinforce the bridge.
The specialized repairs will greatly enhance the bridge’s water-carrying capacity and ensure its safety, increasing its service life significantly. This successful execution also opens the door for Central Railway to undertake similar projects across other aged structures in the railway network, contributing to sustainable infrastructure maintenance.
