The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA), responsible for developing projects on railway land, has initiated the cleaning of the historic Nagpur railway station. To address concerns about potential damage, officials confirmed that the heritage structure will undergo a specialized stone-washing process by an expert agency.
Central Railway officials confirmed that the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC) approved the cleaning with strict guidelines to protect the Grade-II heritage structure. Built from Kanhan yellow sandstone in a classical block style, the historic Nagpur station will be carefully cleaned to preserve its architectural integrity.
According to the local media report, the plan includes relocating nearby structures to enhance the beauty and prominence of the heritage building. A lift will be added to improve accessibility for all, and modernization efforts will be undertaken without compromising the building’s historic charm. Both Nagpur and Ajni railway stations are being upgraded with advanced facilities, improved passenger services, and better connectivity, aimed at boosting the region’s economic growth.
Both projects are advancing steadily and aim to offer passengers a world-class travel experience upon completion. The Nagpur station redevelopment project, awarded to a Delhi-based firm on October 17, 2022, is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs. 488 crore. The project is set to be completed within 36 months. Officials reported significant progress, with 70% of the east wing basement already finished.
