The government operates various schemes across the country that provide free rations to low-income families with ration cards.
Launched during the Covid-19 pandemic, a programme now provides free rations to approximately 80 crore people across the country. Although the scheme is meant for the underprivileged, many ineligible individuals continue to use ration cards to claim these benefits. This practice deprives those who are truly in need. If you are misusing this provision, be aware that the government is conducting a nationwide re-verification of ration card holders. If found ineligible, you could face fines or even imprisonment.
Government Criteria for Ration Card Ineligibility
If you own a four-wheeler, such as a car or tractor, you are not eligible for a ration card. Households with items like refrigerators or air conditioners are also disqualified. Additionally, if your annual income exceeds Rs 2 lakh in rural areas or Rs 3 lakh in urban areas, you do not qualify.
If any member of the household holds a government job, the entire family becomes ineligible for a ration card. Similarly, those who pay income tax or possess luxury items are not eligible for ration benefits. If these apply to you, it is advisable to surrender your ration card.
According to logistics department rules, if you own property (house, building, or land) exceeding 100 square yards, you are not eligible for a ration card.
In such cases, it is advisable to return your ration card to the district logistics department and have your name removed. Failure to do so could result in substantial fines or even imprisonment if the government identifies your case during its investigation.
